Thoughts on The Scarlet Letter

So far, I have found The Scarlet letter to be very confusing. This is probably mostly due to the fact that the english in the book is hard to read and understand. The plot also doesn't not interest me much because I can't relate to something so different from our current society.

New year's resolution

I don't have a new year's resolution because I honestly think they're pointless. Every time that I try to think of one for the new year, I end up forgetting it and ignoring it within a month. Nothing ever really comes out of it. So this year I don't have a specific resolution, but instead I will just try my best at everything I do.

Winter Poem

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

Short Story

One of my favorite short stories is The Lottery. The reason why I liked it was because it left an impression on me. At the end of the story, someone get stoned to death by the rest of the town. This was something that happened every year in that town and it was really for no logical reason. They just wanted to sacrifice someone each year.

Education

- Do you think young people today value their education as much as Sara Smolinsky does? Why or why not?

- I don't think that young people value their education as much as Sara. They even think of it as a problem or burden when they are in elementary and high school. However, when kids go to college thats when I think they really start to value what they have. They realize how fortunate they are to be able to have that opportunity and the money to pay for it. But in general, kids today definitely do not value their education as much as Sara did.

Bread Givers

Bread Givers is a very well written novel by Anzia Yezierska. However, I have not enjoyed it as much as I'd like to. This may be due to the fact that I have an extremely hard time relating to Sara and her family. I live a complete opposite life from her and it takes away from the story's meaning. If I was in a position more similar to hers then maybe I would enjoy the book more. Nevertheless, it is a great story about a poor, Jewish family trying to make a name for themselves in New York City.

I don't think this is entirely true for everyone. It may be true for writers or those who enjoy writing, but for the average student, this is not always true. I know that it's not true for me at least. I have a hard time thinking of things to write sometimes and I don't enjoy it much.
