The Giants Lose...Again

Last night, after a long day of shooting photos, I went to the Giants-Cardinals game at Giants Stadium. As we crawled through the traffic to get into the parking lot, I had to be chary of all the people crossing in out of the lines of cars. Once we got through the gate, we entered the capacious stadium and found our seats. As usual, there was some flagrant and loud people behind us, but they made the game more fun. Before the game started, they introduced the 1986 championship team, and everyone went nuts for the legendary Lawrence Taylor. The game started off great, with the Giants' defense shutting down Arizona. But the second half got ugly when Arizona scored some unanswered points. Everyone believed Eli Manning was culpable for this because of his poor performance. Everyone was screaming and trying to exhort the coach to call better plays. It was a disappointing loss that I hope the Giants will learn from.

Freeze Frame

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to work for a sports photography company taking pictures of the Raiders-Hawks football games. I was very excited for this new job and I definitely didn't have an qualms about how I was going to perform because I love photography. When I got there, I tried to assimilate all of my mom's friend's instructions as I received the nearly $5,000 camera I would be using for the rest of the day. I got into position on the Hillsdale sideline and to anyone who didn't know what I was doing, I may have looked like a pariah, standing all alone the whole day. I felt like an eminent NFL photographer, but on a much smaller scale. As I zoomed in on some of the players' faces, I could see the angry and vengeful demeanor of most of the players. While I was waiting between plays, I noticed that Weigel decided to make a cameo at the game. After watching him get worked up over the coaches' play calling, I could tell he wanted to commandeer one of the teams and run his own game.

Get Money

As winter gets closer and closer, my store, Mt. Everest Ski Shop, gets busier every weekend. During the months in between Summer and Winter, I've grown used to the relatively empty and slow days at work. That is why it was such an aberration when seemingly hundreds of people with their eccentric and wild kids kept coming through our doors this Saturday and Sunday to rent some skis. I barely had time to even stop to go to the bathroom! On top of our new wave of business, I had to train two new employees on Saturday. I had to do everything a little slower so that they could emulate my actions. On the upside, I sold many pairs of skis and boot to all kinds of people, some foreign and enigmatic and some gregarious and full of brio. By the time it hit five o'clock, i was completely disinterested in skis and just wanted to lay in bed.

Fishing On The Susquehanna In July by Billy Collins

I have never been fishing on the Susquehanna or on any river for that matter to be perfectly honest. Not in July or any month have I had the pleasure--if it is a pleasure-- of fishing on the Susquehanna. I am more likely to be found in a quiet room like this one-- a painting of a woman on the wall, a bowl of tangerines on the table-- trying to manufacture the sensation of fishing on the Susquehanna. There is little doubt that others have been fishing on the Susquehanna, rowing upstream in a wooden boat, sliding the oars under the water then raising them to drip in the light. But the nearest I have ever come to fishing on the Susquehanna was one afternoon in a museum in Philadelphia when I balanced a little egg of time in front of a painting in which that river curled around a bend under a blue cloud-ruffled sky, dense trees along the banks, and a fellow with a red bandanna sitting in a small, green flat-bottom boat holding the thin whip of a pole. That is something I am unlikely ever to do, I remember saying to myself and the person next to me. Then I blinked and moved on to other American scenes of haystacks, water whitening over rocks, even one of a brown hare who seemed so wired with alertness I imagined him springing right out of the frame.

I like this poem a lot because it talks about how he imagines fishing on the Susquehanna. I really enjoy fishing in the summer, so i can relate to this. Collins also uses a lot of imagery to convey the scene and paint a mental picture.

Quote

"It is difficult to get the news from poetry, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there." - William Carlos Williams

I think this is saying that poetry is hard to understand at times and it can be hard for everyone to interpret it.

Success

I think success is reached once you have become truly happy. You have done all the things you wanted to do in life and you feel complete. For me, success isn't just about money, by the time I retire, I want to have seen the world, made friends, and live a happy life. No matter how much money and things you have, you're never successful if you aren't happy.

Describe This

It hangs on the wall, moving slightly every now and then. Its colors are iconic and to some, are more than just colors. It is a strong symbol of something important. And it is something we all must pledge to.

Cathedrals and Everyday Use

We have read two great short stories recently. On called "Cathedrals" and one called "Everyday Use." They were both about how people interact with each other and the way they see life. They also talk about how people can change. In "Cathedrals," the wife has a blind man who she was friends with in the past come and visit her and her husband. The husband seems irritated by the fact that there was a blind man in his home, He had never meat a blind man before. At first, he was ignorant and a little mean, but after a night of food and drinks, he got to know him better and they seemed to have become good friends. They ended up drawing a Cathedral together after watching a program about them on TV. They had a real connection that the husband certainly did not think they would have in the beginning of the story.
"Everyday Use" is a story about a poor black family who lived out in the country. The mother and one daughter, Maggie, were very down to earth, normal people who worked for their food and money. But the other daughter, Dee, was different. She was pretty and very materialistic. Maggie always envied her. So after Dee went away to a private school and came back, she was very different. She started to believe that she should go back to her African roots. So she changed to an African name because she thought that they should be named after the people who had oppressed their people. Maggie and her mother thought she was strange and suddenly liked things that she had once hated. She acted very odd and seemed distant to her mother and sister.

Inauguration

I think today's presidential inauguration of Barack Obama is a huge deal. He is our first African-American president and his election was a big moment in American history. I think the inauguration is very hyped up, but it should be. Not only is this something that only happens every four years, It is now something that has never happened before in this country. It is a big moment for both African-Americans and all others.

Secrets

Fortunately for me, I have never had a a serious secret that I can remember. I don't think I have ever had to keep something really important from anyone. I don't like secrets very much, so I'd rather not get involved with them.

Thoughts on The Scarlet Letter

So far, I have found The Scarlet letter to be very confusing. This is probably mostly due to the fact that the english in the book is hard to read and understand. The plot also doesn't not interest me much because I can't relate to something so different from our current society.

New year's resolution

I don't have a new year's resolution because I honestly think they're pointless. Every time that I try to think of one for the new year, I end up forgetting it and ignoring it within a month. Nothing ever really comes out of it. So this year I don't have a specific resolution, but instead I will just try my best at everything I do.
